Safe Cycle Programme

On the 3rd of May 5th and 6th class took part in the Garda Safe Cycling Programme. Two Garda came in to the school after lunch ato teach us about bicycle safety. Their names were Tony and Owen (who was a local guard from Castleconnell Garda Station). First they showed the class a powerpoint explaining the basics of a bike including the different parts. After that we went outside to do different obstacles. These included trying to get our bikes around tight turns and maneuvering our bikes between cones.  It was really fun and we learnt a lot.

Our Active Flag school board

When we began our journey to get an active flag this year we started creating our Active Flag notice board. Our Active Committee decided what was important to keep our school informed about. The main part of our board is our Run Around Europe map. This lets all the boys and girls in the school see exactly how far they have travelled and everybody can see who is winning. Also taking pride of place on out board is our achievers from our school. Many of our boys and girls in this school partake in events and activities outside of school.

Run Around Europe

Following on from our Athletics in our school we began a running initiative in our school. We decided that we would ‘Run Around Europe’. This is a really clever activity that 1st Class teacher Ms. Mcgrath came up with. The idea of this activity is to get pupils of Ahane N.S up and running! Two times a week our teacher brings us out to the yard to run as many laps of the yard as we can in 10 minutes. After we run our teacher records and adds our laps together. Each lap is the same as one kilometre. Each class has a different colour shoe on the map. The laps that we do are updated each week.

Playground buddies

We have started a very special programme in our school this year as part of our Active Flag. 5th and 6th class have been working really hard during their lunch breaks every Friday to be playground buddies to juniors, seniors and first class. Each Friday two children from 5th and 6th come up to the junior yard for each class and play different games with the children. There is a rota that helps the older boys and girls know where they need to be each Friday. Th

Hurling Skills

To get us all moving, our school worked alongside Ahane GAA club to improve our hurling skills. Thanks to our teachers and the GAA club they got a hurling coach on board to commit to come in every Thursday to work with our school. It was decided that junior infants through to second class would have the first block of lessons and after Easter third through to sixth would get a chance to develop their skills. Each class got a 40 minute session with the coach where they learnt how to hold the hurley properly as well as rising, striking and soloing  the ball.

School Athletics

Trials were held in Ahane Natioanl School for the Limerick Primary Schools Cross Country Finals. Children from the age 7 and up competed in the trials. The first six from each race qualified to represent the school on the race day.

Training was held in the school to improve every athlete who was running on the day. everyone got better with all the training they did. Training was coached by Mrs. Kennedy and Mrs. Ryan.

Our Active Schools Committee

This year we are looking to become an Active school for the first time. As we begin this journey we have created a committee to help with the organising of events through out the year. There was very tough competition from the children as they each wrote why they felt that they should be part of the committee for the active flag. After reading each of  the children's fantastic pieces of writing Ms. McGrath final chose an boy and girl from each class from 2nd to 6th class.

Active Flag

The Active School Flag (ASF) is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. The process aims to get more schools, more active, more often.
